An Overlooked Secret To A Happy Life

Do you have an “inner critic” that drives you to constantly do more and achieve more, so that you can feel good about yourself? If so, you need to say “no” to the unrealistic expectations that you have of yourself. Always remember that you are a person of value and worth for who you are, rather than for what you do. In God’s eyes, you are unique and priceless, dearly loved in Christ. (Ephesians 2:10; 5:1). All who have received Christ as Savior have been adopted into God’s forever family. As you treat yourself with love and compassion, you will be well on your way to living a more balanced and enjoyable life.
In Luke chapter 10, Jesus and his disciples were welcomed into the home of a woman named Martha. Martha spent the entire time rushing around, trying to prepare a feast that would impress everyone. This obligation to cook a huge feast was not coming from Jesus. Martha needed to say “no” to societies unrealistic expectations. She also needed to say “no” to her inner perfectionist. It drove her to prepare a lavish meal for Jesus, when a light snack would have been fine.
Jesus wanted to spend a relaxing time visiting with Mary and Martha.
Yet Martha was so rushed and frantic that she was not enjoying Jesus’ visit. She had the Prince of Peace in her own living room, yet she wasn’t experiencing peace. Instead her stress level continued to rise as she frantically rushed about.
While Martha feverishly prepared the meal, she noticed that her sister, Mary, was sitting at the Lord’s feet, listening to Him teach. Martha became irritated at her sister, and a like a child tattling on their sibling to a parent, she said, “Lord doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here, while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
Very gently our Lord corrected Martha saying, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details. There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10: 40-42) Let’s follow the example of Mary and make our relationship with God a priority. Say “no” to unrealistic expectations. Say “yes” to nurturing your emotional and spiritual health.
