The Life Changing Power of Questions

One of the reasons why life coaching is so transformational is due to the power of questions. When you read a book or hear a speech, you are engaged in passive learning. In this type of learning, there is very little retention or application to your life. In contrast, when a life coach asks you an insightful question, you engage in reflection, which results in active learning. Active learning is life changing because you are able to apply your new insight to your own unique situation. This enables you to move beyond mere “head knowledge” so that you are able to take action and begin transforming your life.
Whenever you answer an insightful question, you also obtain a significant increase in your motivation to reach your goals and dreams. In a fascinating experiment, neuroscientists performed brain imaging scans on volunteers to learn how they reacted to different types of stimuli. By using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), the researchers were able to literally see (in real time) what was happening in each volunteer’s brain.
When the volunteers were given “advice” or told what to do, not much happened (in terms of activity) in the person’s brain neural network. However, when they asked the volunteers an insightful question, the researchers were able to see their brains literally “light up” as neurons fired and new pathways were being formed in the volunteers’ brains.
This makes sense when you think about how often you are given advice or told what to do in a typical week. How often do you find someone’s advise useful or appropriate to your exact situation? However, a powerful question helps you tap into your own inner wisdom. As you formulate an answer, you will often be able to find a new, helpful perspective on your situation. This is just one of the reasons why life coaching will make a huge difference in your life.
