How To Deal With A Toxic Work Environment

by

In a previous blog post, I wrote about toxic workplaces.  They are usually characterized by heavy workloads and excessive hours. You are always behind schedule with little hope of things improving.  Some work environments have a more reasonable work load, but you are required to constantly interact with hostile people, such as coworkers, supervisors or customers.

Unfortunately, toxic work environments are becoming more common.  If your work situation is this way, the best solution could be to search for new opportunities, either within your current place of employment, or elsewhere.  Sometimes the healthiest choice is to start fresh with a different employer.

Of course, it can take months to find a new job—especially if you need to take some classes to update your skills or train for a different career.  Meanwhile, your bills need to be paid. Until your circumstances change, how do you cope in the midst of a very stressful working environment?

Unfortunately, many people have experienced the stress of a toxic work environment.  It is important that you do not blame yourself for how your employer is treating you.  You did not cause the toxic and stressful work environment.  It probably existed before you even started working there and it will continue to be chronically stressful, long after you are gone.

The most helpful advice I can give you is to find a new job.  I realize from personal experience how difficult and time consuming this can be.  Regardless of the hassle and inconvenience, it is well worth it.  In order to find a new job, I ended up moving cross country and I’m very glad I did.  How about you?  Have you ever had to leave a toxic employer?  Share your experience in the box below.  Also, if you’ve not received my free report and audio, “Tame Your Stress In 7 Days Or Less,” put your name and email address in the box in the top right hand corner.
