If you are like most people, you deal with stress on a daily basis. Work deadlines, financial pressure, and relationship problems can make it seem like stress is coming at you from all sides. Unrelenting stress and pressure darkens your mood and negatively affects your ability to think clearly or creatively. Not only does it attack your peace of mind, chronic stress can harm your body. Researchers have shown that stress contributes to everything from heart disease to depression.
The latest scientific research has proven that stress is even more damaging then we thought. According to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, chronic stress literally speeds up the aging process in the human body. The researchers examined the white blood cells of mothers whose children suffered from chronic disorders such as autism or cerebral palsy. The stress of caring for these children caused damage to the mother’s telomeres.
Telomeres are the structures on the end of chromosomes that determine how often cells can divide before they die. Shortened telomeres result in shorter healthy cell life and decreased life span. The telomeres of the mothers who were under chronic stress were significantly shorter then mothers who did not have chronically ill children. Although they may have not looked older to you and I, these mothers were aging (genetically) at a faster rate. These stressed-out mothers, from a genetic point of view, had become anywhere from nine to seventeen years older than their chronological age.
You may not have the high level of stress that a mother with a chronically ill child experiences. However, if you do have high levels of stress, it could decrease your life span by five to ten years. This would be tragic and unnecessary. You deserve to live a long, healthy and happy life. Fortunately, there are simple and do-able strategies that can protect your health from the ravages of stress.
